The Google Sitemap Protocol (GSP) allows you to inform the Google search engine crawler about the pages on your web site that are available for crawling. A Sitemap consists of a list of URLs, and may also contain additional information about those URLs, such as the time and date they were last modified, how frequently they change, their relative priority, and their exact location.

Sitemaps are especially useful when users can not reach all areas of a web site through a browseable interface, like when users are unable to reach certain pages or regions of a site by just following the links. Any site where certain pages are only accessible via a search form would benefit from creating a Sitemap and submitting it to search engines.

Please note that the Sitemap Protocol supplements, but does not replace, the crawl-based mechanisms that the Google search engine already uses to discover URLs. By submitting a Sitemap (or Sitemaps) to the Google search engine, you will help that engine's crawler to do a better job of crawling your site.

Using this protocol does not guarantee that your Web pages will be included in the SERPs. In addition, using this protocol may not influence the way your pages are ranked by a search engine.

Once your sitemap is created, you should notify Google of its existence. To do this, you'll need to create a Google account, and go to the Google Sitemap Home. Here you can let Google know where it can find your sitemap, and you can check whether the sitemap has been processed, and if there were any errors encountered during the processing. You can also resubmit the sitemap, or delete it altogether from your Google's list of active sitemaps.
